Re: Stories From the Field
This is a viewpoint I struggle with. For me, the purpose of hiking is enjoying the feeling of being outdoors, being alone in a beautiful place. Sure it's nice to see nice things, but what does it matter if I go back the way I came out? Not to say there's anything wrong with your viewpoint - I know ...

You couldn't find a loop to do bro? What's wrong with it out and back? Don't tell me you're one of those "only do loop" types  Yeah Smokes, that seems a bit amateur-ish. And is your birthday really 4/20? 8-) Amateur? Quite the opposite my bruh - out and backs is for chumps. Walking ...

Re: Merry Holidays!
I haven't been posting much because I'm mostly here to learn, but I wanted to express my appreciation to you for creating this forum. I've learned a lot already and I'm looking forward to hearing from more people and maybe feeling more comfortable to start posting more. Happy new year (namaste)

Re: Winter 23-24: What are you doing?
Oh gosh, I put the reply I meant to put here in the other thread I started. Sorry. Maybe you can reply to me here? Anyway, this is what I wrote: I'm really appreciative of all the great advice offered so far. Unfortunately, I don't have the type of relationship with my parents that would maker it co...

How long exactly? Did you have anywhere to be?socalsmooth wrote: ↑December 11th, 2023, 11:34 am Not exactly wildlife, but it does really tell a story about life in the western US. I call it "Wyoming Traffic Jam." And yes, I just had to sit there until they all left, which was a while.

Re: Becoming a field tech - where to begin?
I'm really appreciative of all the great advice offered so far. Unfortunately, I don't have the type of relationship with my parents that would maker it convenient or comfortable to be spending that much time with them every year. Its not like were estranged or anything, I'm just not particularly cl...

Winter 23-24: What are you doing?
I mean that in the most literal sense. This is the hardest part of being a field tech, right? Jobs are most scarce, you have to find something to do to hold you over until the spring season gets going? Are you working, laying low? What's the best way to approach the "lean months" of winter?

Re: Second Chances
So much that resonated with me in this story. I understand exactly how Mark feels - I guess the corporate experience really is the same everywhere. Such a bummer. I'll really try to keep this in mind so I don't have to have that middle portion of Mark's trajectory where he just gets sucked into the ...

Re: Field Techs - The Unsung Heroes of Biology
I love your writing and I really find it inspiring. This makes a nice companion with the other post you have up so far in the sense that you're talking honestly about the positives and dangers of the work and lifestyle. Not sugar coating or romanticizing it (well, maybe a little). I think I can hand...

Becoming a field tech - where to begin?
If you didn't read my post in the intro thread, I'm thinking about looking for a job as a seasonal biology field tech, but I have no real experience aside from a rather typical interest of the outdoors and outdoor activity. What should I be doing to help myself as a candidate for these jobs? Where s...

Re: Introductions Thread
Hi everyone. I'm 27 and I'm ready for a major life change. I was on track for a pretty successful corporate career, but it just wears on me psychologically so much. I can't bear the pettiness, superficiality, backstabbing and all of that. I don't want to deal with greed and insensitivity and on top ...
