Re: Funny/Weird Youtube Videos

I'd think someone who posts on Instagram so much would take better care of their teeth.

Re: The Future of Field Techs: Race Class and Inclusion

I sympathize with the spirit of the post, but man that's going to be a tough sell in many parts of the US. Especially when you're getting into trans stuff. So that thing happened in Missouri? I wouldn't even have that in my top 10 of "worst places to be a black field biologist" list. Are w...

Re: Stories From the Field

Seems like a weird thing to argue about. If you can't hike without its being a loop then that's especially extreme. Sometimes you only have a certain amount of time where you are and the choice of trials is limited. So what else can you do? Loops are fun if you can do them. Most mountain climbs are ...

Re: THE item you can't do without

To say that the proper footwear is essential is so basic that it's not even worth saying. But while most people would take that to mean a good, sturdy pair of boots, what I've found matters just as much is the right sock setup. Mine is a bit..unusual maybe. When it comes to hiking socks, I'm a Smart...

Re: Stories From the Field

Once upon a time, I encountered, or more accurately was stumbled upon by a feral hog sow and her piglet. Man that was weird. I was just sitting on a log at the edge of a forested area. I heard some stomping coming up from behind me. I got up, walked off a bit and turned around. I saw the shape comin...

Re: Social Media - Yay or Nay

I feel strongly about it because I think it's very destructive, at both the individual and societal level. Many studies have shown it to be addictive and to have other negative emotional effects, jealousy and whatever else. People present these curated (i.e. phony) views of their lives Hell, we know...

90's Music/Culture

I figured I'd take my comment in the music for traveling thread and break it off into it's own thread to not derail everything too much. There's a kind of innocence I miss about 90's culture, especially the music. So much of it was silly and upbeat and fun and wasn't afraid to by overtly nerdy or do...

Re: Social Media - Yay or Nay

Yay fo sho. I'm living this cool life, I want to be sharing it with other people. Shake them out of their cages. No excuse to sit there like a lab rat - you can see the alternatives. My life is great, why wouldn't I want other people to see it. Chicks dig a man with a powerful social media presence...

Re: Music For Traveling

I like some 90's alternative. It's mindless enough, catchy and accessible. I kinda wish there were more options for hearing it. Some of it (somehow) gets lumped in with classic rock, but you're not really going to hear much Soundgarden or STP on a commercial radio station not to mention some of the ...

Hey King, hope I'm not being too presumptuous by starting this thread. My verification e-mail went to my spam. Not a huge deal and I obviously found it, but probably something you can do to improve the user experience. Otherwise so far so good. FWIW, my activation didn't go into the spam. Good work...

Retired in the sense that I've moved on to full time work with my home state's DNR. Sell out!! Jk bro, congrats on the DNR gig. I'll be following in your footsteps someday when I'm ready to hang 'em up too. Also what's the deal with your name, I thought you worked in state government, not ALDI corp...

I noticed that when I was looking as a guest, I couldn't see the photos in the photo thread. It said I didn't have access to the attachments or whatever. I sure am glad I can see 'em now - those are cool! Being from a grassy part of the country I've spent a lot of time in grasslands and really appre...

Re: Becoming a field tech - where to begin?

Skills as the icebreaker and social facilitator are crucial if you have that type of personality. You'll work with a lot of friendly folks, but man, those first few days with a new crew can be awwwkward and a lot of field techs are naturally introverted and just don't have what it takes to get thing...

I've done a little bit of everything including some night work. When it comes to headlamps it pretty much comes down to Petzl and Princeton. Personally, I as set for life when I got the Princeton Vizz. I think it's this model: https://princetontec.com/product/vizz/ It's light, and you have pretty fi...

Hey all. Experienced but retired field tech here, in my 30's from the midwest. Retired in the sense that I've moved on to full time work with my home state's DNR. But I'll always be a field tech at heart and I hope to be able to help some of the new crop and relive some of my glory days riding the r...
