90's Music/Culture

Post by aldiquarter »

I figured I'd take my comment in the music for traveling thread and break it off into it's own thread to not derail everything too much.

There's a kind of innocence I miss about 90's culture, especially the music. So much of it was silly and upbeat and fun and wasn't afraid to by overtly nerdy or dorky (important distinction). Now everything is all about being so tough and cool and look at all my fancy material stuff. All glitter and not even an attempt at substance. If some of the artists in the 90's tried to get signed today, the record execs would be so outraged that they'd have them escorted out of the building by armed guards. I think it's a terrible way for kids to grow up, such an empty and nihilistic approach to everything.

This is the kind of music that was big on alternative stations but has really been forgotten. Not to say that it hasn't stood the test of time, but just that it has no home in the modern cultural landscape.

What do you think?

Uh, Jim Carrey was just like a cast member on a show?

Some show??!! This is In Living Color. The show that in addition to Jim Carrey gave us Jamie Foxx, the Wayans Brother, Jennifer freakin Lopez J-Lo.

Totally groundbreaking. Maybe too far ahead of its time, aside from the production value the playing with racial stereotypes and roles would fit very nicely with todays pop culture vibe. Definitely laid groundwork for Chapell and probably lots of other stuff too.

I seem to remember it being on Sunday nights, possibly before or after the Simpsons (when it was actually a real show and funny). Memory is a bit hazy on that though
